About me

My name is Jamie Bricker and I am a rising Junior at the University of Delaware. I am double-majoring in Political Science and Communications. My photography experience is very limited. Prior to transferring to UD, I attended the George Washington University. During my time there I took a class called "Introduction to Video Production" where I learned how to operate a camera and master editing apps like Adobe Premiere Pro and more. In high school I took a course called "Digital Photography" where I learned how to operate another camera and use different techniques to make a portfolio.

Course Goals

During this course, I hope to refresh my photography skills that I've previously learned. Since my high school photography course, I do not remember much about using the cameras, or the editing software, so I hope to master these once again. Another goal I have is to be able to utilize skills I learn from this course in my everyday life. My sister and I love taking photos, but after taking this course, I hope I can apply some of my knowledge to my everyday life taking photos. Finally, by completing this course, I hope to get an understanding of media and journalism. A major part of Political Science is journalism, and through UD there are not many opportunities in my course plan to explore this. By taking this course, I hope to gain knowledge in the media/journalism field, and broaden my knowledge.

This image is my most successful one from the dozen photo challenge. I used top light to create shadows and alter the lighting from the other candle pictures I took. A challenging aspect of this assignment was to alter the lighting to differentiate the photos from one another. In the future, I will take into account the natural light and time of day I am photographing, to make lighting issues easier to fix.

Aesthetically Evaluative (My photo)

This photograph is from when I was at the beach a few weeks ago. It shows different colors and lights that correlates with aesthetically evaluative photography.

Explanatory (My photo)

This is a photograph showing mixing ingredients. It is explanatory because it shows someone how to mix.

Ethically Evaluative (Sourced from another photographer)

This photograph is from a protest, and explores ethical issues.

Interpretive (Sourced from another photographer)

This photograph is of a dancer. It is interpretive because it leaves room for the audience to decide what happens next.

Theoretical (My photo)

This photo is theoretical because the lights are supposed to look like jellyfish, but they actually have another purpose. I took this photo in a restaurant I went to this summer. The lighting makes the photo dramatic.

Critiquing Photo Challenge

IMG_3700.jpeg

This is my most successful image from the critiquing photo assignment because it best represents theoretical photography. It is dramatic, and the lighting makes the photo more successful. The most challenging part of this assignment is coming up with ideas that match each category. In the future, I will travel to other places to capture better photographs that align with the categories.

My youtube video:

My presentation highlights Nan Goldin, and her work through the years. Her work is presented in galleries, and books of her own. Her photography is unlike any other that I've studied this far, because she photographs very sensitive topics that many are too afraid to cover. She tells her story about her relationships through her photos, and highlights the ups and downs to be real with her viewers. Reviewing this photographer's artwork has changed my perspective because I got to see real stories being told. The sensitive topics displayed through her work were not hidden, and I appreciate her realness and vulnerability through her work. It is inspiring to others and I think her work is important for many to learn about.

For this project, I chose to examine the work of Jeff Wall. I chose to analyze his artwork, because when looking at the other listed artists, his work seemed the most similar to mine. The simplicity of his work reminds me of some photos that I've taken throughout this course, but they still are well done and tell a story. (Wall's photos are on the top row, my photos are on the bottom row)

Course Goals and Achievements

In the beginning of this course, my goal was to learn more about photography and how to use what I learn in my everyday life. After taking this course, I am positive that I am more knowledgeable about photography and artists that I did not know about before. I have learned different aspects of media and learned multiple viewpoints.

This is my most successful image because I think it best represents the style of the artist I was inspired by. The lighting is similar and the photos look vintage and light while showing off a landscape. In the future, I will work on the sizing and angle of my photos to better match the original photo.
